Memory Foam Pillows

Memory foam pillows are made from a special type of foam that shapes itself to your head and neck. They offer great support and can help relieve neck and back pain. They are also good at reducing pressure points.

Memory foams are manufactured by using polyurethane and other several chemicals. It sometimes tends to emit a strong odor. This volatile organic “off-gassing” compound is a well-documented and common property in memory foam pillows. Memory foam pillows are great for people who want extra support and comfort, especially if they have specific pain issues.

Advantages

  • Do not clump
  • Constant fluffing is not required
  • Offers great support
  • Maintain body temperature

Disadvantages

  • Chemical odor ( when new)
  • isn’t moldable/malleable

Gel Pillow

Gel pillows come with gel filling that keeps the pillow firm, cool and consistent. The gel in the pillow keeps the pillow from flattening however it can still be re-shaped/molded for additional comfort.

You will also find some layer of gel around memory foam pillows. These types of pillows are often called gel memory foam pillows. You get cooling features of gel with the contouring of memory foam.

Advantages

  • Do not require fluffing or shaking
  • Easy to care
  • Cooling effect
  • Relieve from Pressure
  • Hypo-allergenic

Disadvantages

  • May not be a good fit for all sleepers
  • You will not sink into the pillow like you would a traditional down pillow

Wedge Pillows

Wedge pillows are triangular shaped pillows that are often used to elevate the upper or lower part of the body. They are great for people with acid reflux, snoring issues, or certain health conditions that benefit from elevation.

If you are looking for extra support for your head, back or legs while sleeping or resting, wedge pillows are the perfect option for you.

Advantages

  • Boost circulation
  • Fight acid reflux
  • Reduce back pain

Disadvantages

  • Limited sleep position
  • Storage issues

Feather Pillows

Feather pillows are filled with the soft feathers from ducks or geese. They are fluffy and light. Feather pillows are a cheaper version of down pillows. Unlike down, the quills of the feathers begin to naturally align together or lay flat. After a while, the pillow turns flat and may not be so comfortable. Some manufacturers frequently add clusters of down into the feather to prevent degeneration of the feathers.

They are very soft and can be fluffed to your desired level of firmness. They also have good air circulation, which helps keep you cool. Feather pillows are best for people who like a softer pillow that can be adjusted for comfort.

Advantages

  • Affordable
  • Light & cuddly

Disadvantages

  • Some products have an unpleasant odor.
  • Requires constant fluffing to maintain the loft
  • Difficult to wash
  • Best for side and back sleepers

Down Pillows

Down pillows are filled with the soft under-feathers of ducks or geese. They are similar to feather pillows but usually softer and more luxurious. Down is the undercoating, fluffy part of the bird's feathers. A real down pillow is enclosed with only down and no feathers. Frequently, feathers are also mixed along with down in the Down pillows and sold.

They are very soft and provide a high level of comfort. They also conform well to the shape of your head and neck. Down pillows are ideal if you want a very soft pillow and don’t mind paying a bit more for high-quality materials.

Advantages

  • Moldable and malleable
  • Light and cuddlesome

Disadvantages

  • Requires constant fluffing to maintain the loft
  • Hard to clean
  • Good ones are pricey
  • Down pillows are good for all sleeping positions

Latex Pillows

Latex pillows are getting quite popular. This pillow is relatively breathable and offers superior support for the neck and head while still retaining its softness. Latex pillows are made from natural or synthetic latex. They are firm and resilient.

They offer firm support and are hypoallergenic. They also keep their shape well and can be very durable. Latex pillows are great for people who need firm support and have allergies, as they are less likely to harbor dust mites.

Advantages

  • Superior support
  • Semi-breathable

Disadvantages

  • Slight rubbery odor
  • Not moldable
  • Too dense and heavy to be considered “cuddly”
  • Works best for back and side sleepers

    Buckwheat Pillows

The natural, traditional buckwheat pillow is still the best choice of pillow for most people. Buckwheat husks are hard and crunchy. But the hulls in the pillow resist dust mites that help reduce neck pains and aches by conforming perfectly to the body contours.

    Advantages

    • Superior support
    • Breathable & promote air flow
    • Long life-span
    • Moldable/malleable

    Disadvantages

    • Buckwheat hulls produce rustling sound when shifted
    • Too firm for some
    • Works best for back, stomach and side sleepers.

    Fiberfill Pillows

Also, called Poly-fill, fiberfill is the cheapest on the list. It tends to flatten out faster and also, unfortunately, the polyester products are manufactured using chemicals which significantly contribute to environmental pollution. This may be a good choice, only if the price is of primary concern else you can go for another choice.

    Advantages

    • Dirt cheap
    • Easy to clean

    Disadvantages

    • Short lifespan, loses elasticity with use
    • Potentially hazardous to health and environment
    • For stomach sleepers, the polyester-filled pillow can be fine unless it isn’t very thick.

      Conclusion

Choosing the right pillow can greatly impact your sleep quality. Whether you prefer the softness of a down pillow or the firm support of a latex pillow, there’s a type of pillow to suit your needs. Choose the right memory foam pillow and sleep tight.
