How Sleep Impacts Relationships

How Sleep Impacts Relationships

You must have heard the phrase “woke up on the wrong side of bed”, it can literally come true if you don’t get enough sleep at night. If your partner is not getting enough sleep at night and is being cranky and irritated the whole day, it will surely affect your equation with your partner. Sleep not only makes us feel energized and refreshed but it also has a big impact on our relationship with others, especially with people we love.

In this blog, we’ll learn why quality sleep is the secret behind a long lasting relationship with your other half and how you can sleep better at night.

Sleep helps us communicate better

It is hard to express yourself calmly if you are all tired and groggy. People who don't get enough sleep are more likely to shun social situations and keep their distance with other people. In a relationship, communication is the key, but lack of sleep can make us more sensitive and less patient and this can create misunderstanding and arguments with our loved ones.

Those who are well rested and have a quality sleep at night are better at listening and expressing thoughts and this can create a stronger bond with their partner.

Lack of Sleep can Create Conflicts

Every relationship has ups and downs, and how we deal with the bad days defines the quality of our relationship. Lack of sleep makes it hard for you to resolve a conflict or disagreement with your partner calmly and compromise; you become more reactive and sensitive to the situation, which could worsen it. While, when you are well rested, you are more likely to handle the matter calmly and look for a solution that works best for you and your partner.

Quality Sleep is the Key to Intimacy in Relationships

When we are sleep deprived, it is normal to prioritize sleepover intimacy, and if your partner wants to get intimate, it will be hard to get into the mood for romance, which can make your partner feel neglected and annoyed. A good sleep schedule can put us in the mood for romance and we are more likely to have energy and desire to connect with our partner emotionally and physically.

Sleeping Well Helps to Connect Better Emotionally

Quality sleep keeps our emotions in line and our brain sharp. This helps us connect better emotionally, engage in meaningful conversations, and pay more attention to our partner. So, if you sleep well, you will be more present and attentive with your partner. Plus, no one wants to be around or be someone who is constantly irritated and exhausted.

Lack of sleep affects self-confidence

If you are sleep deprived, there are some side effects. Tired people look less healthy and sociable. If you are tired, you’ll automatically feel lazy to dress up or to look your best. This won't matter to your other half (they're going to love you anyway), but if you're not feeling your best, it affects your confidence and happiness, which can make you less likely to spend quality time in your relationship.

Simple Ways to Improve Your Sleep and Your Connection

Of course, not every relationship problem has to do with a lack of sleep, but the general feeling of grumpiness that comes from interrupted nights undoubtedly plays a role in everyday fights or disagreements with your partner. Here are some simple tips you can follow to sleep better at night and wake up all refreshed and energized.

  • Prioritize Sleep: It is important to create a fixed sleep schedule for yourself and your partner. Try to sleep at the same time everyday and wake up around a fixed time every morning. You can have slightly different timings based on your schedule but try to maintain a fixed schedule even on weekends. Let your female partner have 10-20 minutes of more sleep as women need more sleep than men scientifically (also it will make them super happy and loved).
  • Communicate Openly: Try to communicate your sleep needs clearly and calmly to your partner. Try to support each other in getting quality sleep at night. It is important to understand that sleep is very important to the human body to function properly and if your partner is not getting enough sleep due to any XYZ reason, it will have a negative impact on your relationship with your partner.
  • Create a Sleep-Friendly Environment: It is important to have a conductive sleep environment to fall asleep faster and to have quality sleep at night. Make sure your room is dark, quiet and at an optimal temperature for uninterrupted  sleep. Also try not to use your phone, or laptop, or watching TV while in bed, as blue light can make it hard for you to fall asleep. Keep your bed just for sleeping and sex; avoid doing anything else on your bed so that your mind recognizes it as a place to sleep and can prepare itself to sleep whenever you go to bed. Use a good quality pillow and mattress to avoid a stiff neck and back in the morning.
  • Practice Healthy Sleep Habits: Avoid using any electronic devices just before bed. Try to do some physical activities during the day but not immediately before bedtime, although you can try light stretches and meditation. Don’t eat heavy meals just before bed, try to finish your dinner 2-3 hours before going to bed so that your body gets sufficient time to digest the food. Avoid drinking caffeine or alcohol in the second half of the day as it can make it hard for you to fall asleep.

Conclusion

Sleep is important for everyone to give our best during the day. By sleeping well at night, we can make our relationship stronger by creating more fulfilling connections with our loved ones, communicate more effectively with our partner and enjoy every moment together. So, when you go to sleep  tonight, remember this is going to define how you'll perform during the day so take care of yourself by sleeping tight and also you are nurturing the relationships that matter to you the most.
